La Monda Kiosko

ARCHITECTURAL INSTALLATION

"La monda kiosko" means "the kiosk of the world" in Esperanto, the universal language invented by Ludwik Lezjer Zamenhof in the hope of bringing people together.

The word "kiosk" comes from the Persian "kušk", meaning a small garden palace.

This project was imagined in collaboration with Réponse B, a collective of architects and designers committed to building with local bamboo. It was designed for the "Jardins du Monde en Mouvement" festival organized by the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris in its landscaped park, to promote the values of this place on the occasion of the Cité's centenary.

The Monda Kiosko is a space for conviviality and encounters, like a suspended, shaded island. The installation is open to all horizons. At its living heart is a young bamboo plantation growing towards a central skylight.

The structure of the installation is also made of bamboo, directly linking the building material to its natural origin. The aim is to demonstrate bamboo's often misunderstood technical and environmental performance.

Bamboo is a symbol of resilience, adaptability and wisdom. It grows on every continent, sometimes in extreme climates. It is a familiar, even essential, plant in many cultures. Its root system, the rhizome, regenerates and maintains soil when erosion threatens. It links each thatch to the rest of the bamboo grove like a single being, a metaphor for the interconnectedness of humans and ecosystems.
